Association News:

1.  PNWGFA Honorary Membership Program
THANK YOU, we heard back from quite a few of you regarding worthy candidates for Honorary Membership in the Association.  Last week the PNWGFA Board of Directors voted to induct these Honorary Members.  

We will be inviting all Honorary Members to the 90th Annual June Convention in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.  We will offer them free Golf, Welcome Reception Thursday and Breakfast on Friday.  (The invitation will also include their spouse for the Welcome Reception.)  Each member will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations.  If you would like to SPONSOR any of these events for an Honorary Member who use to work for your company or just someone you haven't seen in a while and would like to, please e-mail me or call the office to let me know.  


2.   Scholarship Committee Has Made the Selection
The Scholarship Committee moved quickly through all the applications and has selected the top 4 students to receive $1000 each.  

Big thanks to the committee for their time and effort on this difficult project.  Scholarship Committee:  Kevin Whitehall, Chairman, Central Washington Grain Growers; Jim Bafus, Almira Farmers Warehouse; and Ed Knott, CLD Pacific Grain.

The winners of the 2007 PNWGFA Scholarship Awards:

Keslye M. Llewellyn -- She is studying Animal Science/Pre-Vet at WSU and plans to get her DVM.  She would like to start off working for an established Vet and then open her own practice, this would enable her to work and be a part of the Agricultural Industry.  She comes from a great academic family, her brother Tyler has won this scholarship twice.  Keslye's family has a long history with Almira Farmers Warehouse and was sponsored by Jim Bafus.

Veronica Mielke -- She is studying chemistry at Saint Martin 's University and plans to become a doctor and practice sports medicine or general medicine.  Veronica's family does business with Odessa Union Warehouse and was sponsored by Karen Alumbaugh.

Andrea Payne -- She is attending WSU to obtain her Bachelor of Arts  in Hospitality Business Management.  Upon graduation she would like to work in the Hospitality Industry in a metropolitan area.  Andrea's family has a long history with the PNWGFA, her father Mitch worked for Johnson Union Warehouse  and currently manages Columbia County Grain Growers.  She was sponsored by Bruce Bond with Northwest Grain Growers.

Joel Zwainz -- He is currently a freshman at the University of Idaho , working on his Bachelor of Science in Agri-business.  After graduation he plans to work in the business sector for several years, then return to the family farm as a fifth generation farmer.  Joel's family does business with Reardan Grain Growers and was sponsored by Keith Bailey.

 
3.   90th Annual Convention & Golf Tournaments
Apparently plenty of you plan to join us at the 90th Annual Convention in June, we have already filled our room block at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.  We are holding more space at the Coeur d'Alene Inn, across the street from the Resort.  (They are owned by the same company.)  The Inn will have a shuttle service to take people back and forth for our events.

If you have not made your reservations, please do it today.  The room block at the Coeur d'Alene Inn ends this Friday (May 25th).  The information on the Inn is listed below.  If you REALLY wanted to be at the Resort, please get on their waiting list, as other groups cancel we will be able to add their rooms to our block.

Golf Information...Sterling Haskins (Convention Committee Chairman) and Jeff Young (Golf Chairman) have decided on the two courses we will be playing for the 90th Annual Convention. 
Thursday, June 28th we will play Liberty Lakes Golf Course
Friday, June 29th we will play Circling Raven Golf Course

The Foursomes on Thursday at Liberty Lakes will be assigned by Sterling & Jeff.  On Friday at Circling Raven you will have the opportunity to pick three of your teammates and the fourth will be assigned. 

(Don't forget...at this year's Reception we will have an Auction for Advertising Space on the Back Cover of our Annual Directory.  This is a VERY PROMINENT Advertising spot...don't miss the opportunity to have your company pictured on the back of the Directory for all of 2008.)  


4.   Idaho Trout Fry - Save the Date
This event is a GREAT social outing, we get together for Golf and a fun Reception.  The event takes place at Clear Lake Country Club in Buhl, Idaho on Thursday, September 13, 2007.  Please hold this date and join us for a really good time!

5.  UDSA - Farm Bill Updates
Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns has made a couple announcements recently regarding proposals to expand and improve trade.  Follow this link to the USDA Farm Bill webpage to pick up the details.  There are also some links that address 2007 Farm Bill Legislative Language, Specialty Crops and a section to review proposals by Title.


6.  WRDA Bill - Overwhelmingly Passes the Senate!
